Letter of Intent
To the Elections Committee, Board of Directors, and my SNMA Family,
I am writing to express my earnest intent to run for the position of National President-Elect of the Student National Medical Association. My journey with the SNMA, alongside my external leadership experiences, has profoundly prepared me for this role, grounding me in a deep understanding of its responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities. As the chief programmatic officer, the National President steers the SNMA toward fulfilling its mission of supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians. My tenure as Regional IX Treasurer, Grants Subcommittee Chair, and a Future Leadership Project (FLP) Fellow, in conjunction with my external leadership experience, has been instrumental in shaping my strategic vision as well as sharpening my programmatic and operational understanding, a requirement for this leadership position.
Building upon this foundation, my platform “Enrich, Empower, Establish” aims to drive the SNMA forward:
Enriching the Member Experience: I am committed to enhancing the benefits of SNMA membership by creating a centralized hub through our website for easier access to these resources. This initiative will ensure that every member has easy access to our programs while being able to fully leverage our organization’s and institutional partners’ current opportunities.
Empowering Members, Chapters, and Regions: My focus will be empowering our members, chapters, and regions with the resources and support needed to execute impactful programming that advances our mission. This includes bolstering our professional development programs and reinforcing avenues by which members can educate themselves and effectively address health disparities at the local, state, and national levels.
Establishing Our Presence: A key pillar of my platform is the reclamation and sustainability of SNMA chapters facing adversity due to a lack of institutional support. This initiative aims to ensure that the support network of the SNMA is accessible to every underrepresented minority medical student across the nation. My experience as an NFLP fellow has illustrated our success in member recruitment and organizational growth. However, there is room for improvement in advocating for our members and chapters at respective campuses. In light of the recent attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the country, I am convinced that confronting these issues should not be done in silos, but through partnerships with organizations to inspire change on multiple fronts. As president, I am committed to collaborating with organizations that share our mission to fortify our defenses and protect the house of SNMA.
My vision for the SNMA also includes leveraging my President-Elect year to work closely with the current National President, ensuring continuity while integrating innovative strategies to meet the evolving needs of our members. My experience as the first Assistant Surgeon General to the Eastern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and revitalizing my local SNMA chapter post-pandemic, has equipped me with a unique perspective on health advocacy, program development, and community engagement. Transparency and accountability remain paramount, especially amidst the dual demands of medical school and organizational leadership. My commitment to open communication, fostering strong team dynamics, and building personal relationships within the leadership team has been crucial in my previous roles and will continue to guide my leadership as National President-Elect. Inspired by the SNMA’s mission and my upbringing in a family dedicated to service, I am prepared to lead with empathy, strategic foresight, and a collaborative spirit. I look forward to contributing to the SNMA’s mission, ensuring it remains a vibrant community that effectively supports its members and advances health equity.
Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am eager to bring my vision, experience, and dedication to the role of SNMA National President-Elect and to work alongside the SNMA leadership to usher in a new chapter of growth and impact.
